Dealing with the disposable nappy
mountain
£40 million is spent annually on the
collection and disposal of 800,000 tonnes of nappy waste throughout
the UK, most of which is borne by council tax payers. This amounts
to a staggering 4% of all household waste.(Dumping the Diaper
Report, 2000)
"A healthy child can live to be a
hundred years old, yet their first ever disposable nappy will
still be lying in a landfill site in 500 years. How ironic then
that we label single use nappies "disposable" when nobody
knows how to dispose of them!"

Healthy Bots
"I, myself, enjoy wearing natural
fibres, not because they look neatly ironed, or plastically perfect,
but because they feel comfortable. It is strange therefore, that
we are prepared to keep chemically saturated paper pulp and plastic
next to our precious babies' skins 24 hours a day for up to 2
and a half years."

Bum deal !
"I was worried about the cost of disposable
nappies. Buying Ellies' s cotton nappies saved me a clear £600
pounds. And now I am re using them on baby Thomas."
Tilly Ashton, 31, Monmouthshire mum.

The first project proposed by Sustainable
Wales Projects Ltd is a cotton nappy laundry service. This service
delivers, collects and launders reusable cotton nappies, to individuals,
hospitals, nurseries and créches. A nappy laundry service
provides users with all of the health and environmental benefits
of reusable nappies, without the inconvenience of washing.
It is the intention of Sustainable Wales Projects
Ltd to set up satellite co-operative nappy collection services
throughout Wales, these satellites will feed back into a central
laundry service.

Since the early 1980s disposable nappies
have been a convenient choice for busy parents. However, in less
than two decades they have gone from being a novel part of the
convenience revolution to a major problem of waste
disposal and resource use.
A nappy laundry service is an example of
an indigenous service in local communities, which can add to economic
vitality, provide employment and prove an economical option for
low income families
