Bridgend Adapts | Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr yn Addasu

  • Maesteg Town Hall Maesteg UK (map)

Climate change is here. We are already seeing the impact of climate change across our communities in Bridgend and we need to prepare now. This is the first meeting to discuss ways forward and how to support each other, now and for future generations.

By mid-century, we will see increasingly warmer and wetter winters, hotter and drier summers, and a higher frequency of extreme weather events. This will impact our landscape, infrastructure, services and communities. Many of these impacts are common to the rest of Wales, UK and globally.

However, there are a number of additional factors specific to Bridgend that increase the challenges faced in preparing for climate change. The linear topography of Bridgend’s valleys (Ogmore, Garw and Llynfi) make them more vulnerable to becoming inaccessible in the event of failure of infrastructure pinch points.

These same communities are particularly vulnerable to repeated flooding, and erosion of slopes and river banks. The industrial heritage of these areas also results in increased risks of landslides and subsidence, both more likely to increase alongside extreme weather events and increased precipitation.

This event will look at the specific risks to Bridgend County Borough, as identified in a Climate Change Risk Assessment undertaken by Cwm Taf Morgannwg Public Services Board, and explore the role of communities in taking action in adapting and building climate resilient communities.

This event is targeted at all local community groups in the Bridgend Borough; (and we would particularly like to welcome those in the social care sector).
